Each foot consists of 26 bones, as well as numerous ligaments, tendons, and muscles. As the aging process occurs, the feet can become weakened by daily stress, but there are measures that can be taken to maintain the health of the feet. These include washing and drying the feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, and trimming the toenails correctly, which may help to prevent ingrown toenails from developing. Blood circulation may be improved, which can contribute to having good foot health. This is accomplished by frequently practicing a gentle exercise routine. It is also beneficial to check the soles of the feet for existing cuts, bruises, and scrapes that may have developed, in addition to wearing socks that can absorb sweat. The feet can feel the most comfortable in shoes with a lower heel, made of breathable materials, and having adequate cushioning that may help to balance the weight of the body. If you have questions and would like more information about how to take care of elderly feet, please confer with a podiatrist.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Darren Day, DPM from Hawaii. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

What Is Morton’s Toe?

Morton’s toe is a foot condition that is obvious as the second toe is longer than the first toe, or big toe. Research has indicated it affects approximately ten percent of the population, and may cause foot pain. Many people may refer to this ailment as Greek toe, and this is a common sight on classic Greek sculptures. Morton’s toe develops from purely genetic reasons, and it is determined by the long bones in the foot, which are called the metatarsal bones. Pain may gradually develop during the beginning stages of taking a step, and this is the result of pressure that is exerted on the longest toe, which is the second toe in patients who have this condition. It can cause the foot to roll excessively inward, and may be controlled by wearing custom-made orthotics. Mild relief may be found when shoes a half size larger are selected, and this may help to diminish some of the pressure. If you have Morton’s toe, and are experiencing foot pain, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can help you to manage this foot condition.

Dealing With Corns on the Feet

Corns on the foot develop from friction, usually as a result of a toe rubbing against the inside of a shoe. A callus, or toughened skin, develops with a hardened kernel at its center, thus the name corn. Most corns can be treated with a series of foot care measures, but people with diabetes, poor circulation, or foot deformities are wise to seek immediate help from a podiatrist. The first and best defense against developing a corn is to wear shoes that fit properly and to wear socks that form a kind of cushion, lessening friction. A warm foot bath can help soften the callused area, and a pumice can help to reduce its size. Keeping the feet moisturized also can help prevent the formation of a corn. A number of types of foot pads are available to protect the toe from further friction. It is not wise to try to remove a corn yourself with any sharp object, as this may lead to an infection. If a corn does not go away or causes severe pain, it is a good idea to make an appointment with a podiatrist who can treat the problem safely.

Corns can make walking very painful and should be treated immediately. If you have questions regarding your feet and ankles, contact Darren Day, DPM of Hawaii. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Corns: What Are They? And How Do You Get Rid of Them?
Corns are thickened areas on the skin that can become painful. They are caused by excessive pressure and friction on the skin. Corns press into the deeper layers of the skin and are usually round in shape.

Ways to Prevent Corns
There are many ways to get rid of painful corns such as:

  • Wearing properly fitting shoes that have been measured by a professional
  • Wearing shoes that are not sharply pointed or have high heels
  • Wearing only shoes that offer support

Treating Corns

Although most corns slowly disappear when the friction or pressure stops, this isn’t always the case. Consult with your podiatrist to determine the best treatment option for your case of corns.

Plantar fasciitis is a form of heel pain that is quite common. It occurs when the plantar fascia tissue that connects the heel with the toes becomes damaged and sometimes torn through overuse. Plantar fasciitis causes pain and swelling in the tissue, which is worse in the morning, because the plantar fascia tissue tightens while you are sleeping. A podiatrist deals with cases of plantar fasciitis every day and has many forms of treatments to alleviate the painful symptoms of this condition. Your podiatrist may tape your foot with a rigid adhesive sports strapping tape to reduce the stretch and strain on your plantar fascia. Foot taping is a very safe treatment method, which sometimes may provide immediate relief. If you have heel pain, get your condition diagnosed by a podiatrist and discuss whether foot taping might be an appropriate treatment method.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Darren Day, DPM  from Hawaii. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.
